About this shop
Mahón’s local market has been housed in the cloister of the Church of El Carme since 1884. Mercat des Claustre, popularly known as “Sa Plaça”, is a distinctive and unusual market that has occupied the former cloister of the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for almost 140 years. The building was constructed by the Carmelite order between 1750 and 1808. In neoclassical style, it has served many purposes over time. After the disentailment of Mendizábal in 1835, the same space housed the civil guard barracks, the prison, the courthouse, the market and even a school. It was remodelled at the end of the 20th century to adapt the market to modern commercial needs, while preserving its local essence. Today you can still find fruit, vegetables, cured meats, meat and all kinds of local and seasonal food, now alongside non-food shops and dining spaces. Activities take place throughout the year and, especially in summer, the cloister courtyard becomes a venue for concerts and cultural events.
